The story also revolves around a protagonist and a high schooler, Sidney Prescott, who struggle against a succession of murderers. A town policeman, Dewey Riley, and tabloid reporter, Gale Weathers, along with other friends, supported Sidney.
2. Scream 2 (1997)
Released on 12 December 1997, the second part again follows the character Sidney Prescott, but now she is a college student. The killers are also doing their killing by wearing a ghostmask.
Sidney can’t escape her past from the traumatic killings. A new copycat killer has followed her and killed many other students on campus. Many characters from the first part are featured in the installment.
The installment was financially successful and received critical praise for deconstructing the horror film sequel.
3. Scream 3 (2000)
Premiered on 3 February 2000, Scream 3 continued with Sidney Prescott facing a new Ghostface killer and the truth about her mother, leading to the start of the Ghostface killings. It results in drawing Sidney to Hollywood, where she attempts to end the brutal cycle of killings.
The third installment was not as popular as previous ones as it focused more on humor instead of horror and violence. However, some people reacted positively to this change and praised it.
4. Scream 4 (2011)
After eleven years, the Scream franchise was renewed for the fourth part in 2011. The reason behind this long break was that the producer of the previous three Scream films, Cathy Konrad, has filed a lawsuit against The Weinstein Company, the franchise distributor.
Cathy claimed that the company violated an agreement with her company, Cat Entertainment. According to the agreement, she has the rights to produce all Scream movies.
But she was forced to walk off the production without any compensation. The case was settled out of court by The Weinstein Company in April 2011. On 15 April 2011, the fourth installment was released successfully.
It featured a new Ghostface killer emerging as Sidney returned to the town. As the new Ghostface killings continued, Sidney was forced to stay in the town, leading her to become a suspect.
5. Scream (2022)
It was already confirmed that there will be a fifth and sixth installment of the franchise after the success of the fourth part. On 14 January 2022, Scream 5 was released with another Ghostface killer emerging.
Tara Carpenter, played by Jenna Ortega, became the killer’s first victim, but she survived. As a result, her sister Sam, played by Melissa Barrera, and their friends begin an investigation to find the Ghostface killer’s new identity.
While investigating, they shared paths with other characters, such as Sidney, who were involved in the killings.
6. Scream IV (2023)
On 10 March 2023, the sixth franchise installment premiered with the same creative and production team. The story continues with Tara Carpenter and her sister, along with their friends, Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin, who shifted to New York City to start a new chapter of their lives.

But the new start is not going to be easy, as a new Ghostface killer is coming after them.
Is There Going to be a Scream 7?
Yes, Scream 7 is under development and set to release sometime at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. However, most of the cast members will return for the upcoming part.
But lead actress Neve Campbell, who played Sidney Prescott, had already left the show as she felt the offer presented to her didn’t equate to her value.
If makers can treat a lead actress like this, it is doubtful whether Jenne Ortega, who played Tara Carpenter, will make a return or not. However, Jenne is also busy shooting for Wednesday, Season 2, and Beetlejuice Season 2.
So, it is difficult to say if Jenne will return for the seventh installment. On the other hand, it is also unclear if Melissa Barrera, who played the role of Tara’s sister, will reprise her role as Sam Carpenter.
